Call Without a Phone: How Custom Subdomains Can Save You in Emergencies
When your phone is lost, stolen, or dead, you often can’t remember the numbers you need most—like family or emergency contacts. In those moments, reaching out quickly can be tough.
But in today’s world, almost everyone has a smartphone with internet access. It’s easy to borrow someone’s device—but what if you could just type a simple link like call.mom.example.com and instantly make the call?
In this blog, we’ll explore how custom subdomains can turn any connected device into a lifeline—no apps, no logins, just fast, direct calling when it matters most. You don't need to have much technical knowledge but the only things you need to have are:
1. Vercel account to have SSL configured for free otherwise you can also use a minimal tool called surge.sh to deploy your code instantly.
2. Your own personal domain.
3. GitHub account
Steps:
2. Once you have it in your GitHub, open Vercel -> Add New -> Project -> Import Git Repository -> Deploy.
3. Next, under Domains, click on Add domains.
4. Here, type something that is short and easy to remember. E.g. callmom.xyz.com or callpapa.xyz.com. Make sure you own the domain and have DNS record console open. Keep 'Connect to an environment - Production' selected.
Now, you get CNAME value that needs to be entered in your domain's DNS record.
6. After CNAME has been created in your domain provider's DNS console, wait few minutes before clicking on the Refresh button.
After this you are able to open the link and call anyone. If you want to create for many people and wished to separate them on the basis of different categories like home.mom.xyz.in or home.sister.xyz.com or work.manager.abc.net then you can do this way.
If you wish to know how does it look like, you feel free to click on this link and it will open a dialer with "+910123456789": testcall.sumitkp.in
Keep scrolling if you wish to know how does it work.
In the head section in the HTML file:
<head>
<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;url=tel:+910123456789">
</head>
The 'tel:' is a special URL scheme that tells the browser to open the device's dialer with the specified phone number. When a user visits a page with this code on a smartphone, it will automatically launch the phone's dialer app with the number pre-filled.
